In March 2016, artists Hamish McLain and Robbie O’Halloran will exhibit new work in the Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbarn site in Langdale, Cumbria. Schwitters spent the final years of his life here after fleeing first Nazi Germany and then Norway, and following a short period in London, during which he tried unsuccessfully to establish himself in the prevailing artistic circles.
Hamish and Robbie, who are both primarily painters, will spend the weeks leading up to the exhibition living and working on the Merzbarn site. The artists have set up a working blog for the project at http://merzbarn16.wordpress.com. This will serve as a visual and written repository of images, observations, debate and developing ideas surround-ing painting, both contemporary and past, and an artist’s response to location.
The project will culminate in an exhibition and an afternoon of talks in the Shippon Gallery, a space adjoining the Merz Barn site in Ambleside. The artists will discuss the ideas explored during the residency, inviting contributions from the audience.
Whilst the exhibition itself is not meant to be about Schwitters or the Merzbarn exclusively, the legacy of the artist in the cultural history of Cumbria and Schwitters’ unique and troubled position in British art will certainly be a presence in the project and discussions.
Hamish McLain is based in Cumbria. Originally from London, he graduated with an MA in Fine Art in 2013 from Chelsea College of Art. Robbie O’Halloran is originally from Ireland.
